COMITÉ EXECUTIVO DO MILSET - AMARILLO (TEXAS), EUA

New Executive Committee combines continuity, renewal
The MILSET General Assembly, meeting in the Czechoslovak capital during the 1991 International Science Fair, elected eight new members to the movement's 19-person Executive Committee. But the infusion of new blood was matched with a concern for continuity, as the organization's chairman, vice-chairman and secretary-general were all elected to repeat terms.
Among the newcomers are representatives of youth science organizations from the United States, Sweden and Portugal. The newly elected members are: Sam Aldouri, president, Club of Scientific Hobbies (USA); Ghazzi Bennani, vice-president, Ribat El Fath (Morocco); Estelle Bourette, international delegate for scientific and technological activities of the Fédération internationale pour l'éducation de l'enfance et de l'adolescence (France); Carole Charlebois, general director, Conseil de développement du loisir scientifique (Quebec); Mário Freire, coordinator of the São Mamede Biology and Geology Club (Portugal); Gun Olsson, international secretary, Swedish Youth Science Federation; Guy Severs, director of Les Jeunesses Scientifiques (Belgium); Jean-Pierre Trillet, Association of museums and cultural, scientific, technological and industrial centres (France). Mr. Trillet served as director general of the 1989 Brest ESI.

Amarillo, Texas, hosts MILSET Board, Exec meeting
MILSET Board and Executive Committee members met on April 6—8 in Amarillo, site of the upcoming ESI 93, to chart the course of the movement for the coming months and to deal with current business.
13 of the Committee's 19 members attended, with preparations for the 1993 International Science Fair (ESI), the Genoa "summer university" and youth participation in the upcoming World Energy Conference heading the agenda. These issues are covered in the pages of this edition of the MILSET News.
Board and Committee members also discussed the following:
❑ Resignation
Estelle Bourette handed in her resignation from the Executive Committee. She will be replaced by Stanislav Medricky of AMAVET, a Czech Republic youth science organization, until the end of her term, in July 1993.
❑ Regional offices
A working document setting up guidelines for the establishment of MILSET regional offices around the world was tabled. The document will be completed during the summer and discussed at the next Board meeting, scheduled for September in Paris.
❑ International Science Fair
Associations from South Africa and Sweden — the Pretoria-based Council for Expositions for Young Scientists and the Swedish Young Scientists Federation — have declared their interest in staging future International Science Fairs. The South African group hopes to submit its candidacy for the 1995 or 1997 ESI, while the Swedish federation will be in the running for the 1997 event.
❑ Cooperation
Last summer, Portugal's São Mamede Biology and Geology Club announced that it would be assisting four Portuguese-speaking African countries in setting up leisure-time science clubs. Thanks to this initiative in international cooperation — which won the Portuguese group the MILSET Award — clubs are now functioning in Guinée-Bissau, Mozambique, and in São Tomé e Principe.

The pre-launch countdown to ESI 93 is underway. A joint agreement to stage the Amarillo International Science Fair was signed in early April by a visiting MILSET delegation and local Organizing Committee president Sam Aldouri.
Amarillo, a West Texas city of 200,000 had been awarded the Fair by the MILSET Board at its 1991 meeting in Prague when war-damaged Kuwait was forced to withdraw its candidacy.
Mr. Aldouri, a petroleum engineer, is founder and president of the 400-member Club of Scientific Hobbies (COSH), based in Amarillo, and a member of the MILSET Board. All major venues have now been chosen, Mr Aldouri told the MILSET News in an interview in Montreal, where he had stopped off en route to the Quebec science fair.
"Now that the major questions are all but solved, we're working out the details. After a suggestion of the MILSET delegation which visited us in April, we've added two extra days, meaning ESI 93 will run from July 2 — 10, and laid on a social night in addition to the opening and closing ceremonies," he said.
The 1993 Fair, including workshops and round-table discussions, will be staged at the spacious (10,000 capacity) Amarillo Civic Center.
Several students from nearby Texas State Technical College, which houses COSH offices, will be helping with registration, scheduled to begin in May.
The Organizing Committee, which includes COSH advisors Darlene McCormick, Barbara Anderson, and Kathy Barrett, with Carole Charlebois of Montreal's CDLS as official MILSET liaison, has already received firm commitments for almost two thirds of the projected $100,000 ESI budget, primarily for transportation, promotion, materials and recreational facilities.
Estimated expenses, noted Mr. Aldouri, are based on a maximum per-delegate cost of $250 (US), to include room and board, and all ESI-related activities such as visits
